Oglebay Good Zoo Awarded $2.3 million Granted for Renovation and Updgrades

The West Virginia Water Development Authority (WDA) has awarded Oglebay Good Zoo a grant of $2.3 million to support renovations and upgrades to the zoo’s entrance, including the lobby, gift shop, café, restrooms, and back courtyard. The project is set to begin in early 2026 and is part of a larger $7.5 million expansion plan focused on enhancing the visitor experience.

“We are incredibly grateful to the West Virginia Water Development Authority for their support in helping us improve the guest experience at Oglebay Good Zoo,” said Bob Peckenpaugh, Wheeling Park Commission President & CEO. “This renovation is a crucial step forward in ensuring our visitors have a comfortable and enjoyable experience, while also allowing us to continue our mission of wildlife conservation and education.”

The renovation project will include improvements to the zoo’s entrance, lobby, gift shop, café, restrooms, and back courtyard. These upgrades will enhance accessibility features, improve the flow of visitors throughout the space, and create a more welcoming atmosphere. The expanded café will offer a variety of food and beverage options, including grab-and-go snacks and made-to-order meals, ensuring guests have a relaxing and enjoyable visit. Additionally, a new gazebo with upgraded picnic facilities will provide guests with a comfortable space to enjoy their meals and the zoo’s natural beauty.

As the only AZA-accredited zoo in West Virginia, Oglebay Good Zoo is home to more than 250 animals representing 68 species, including 20 rare or endangered species. Welcoming over 120,000 visitors annually – including 13,000 schoolchildren – the zoo is recognized as a leading destination for educational and hands-on animal experiences.
