Bridge Street Middle School 7th Graders Take Flight

For the last 5 years, Mr. Dague’s 7th grade Science Class at Bridge Street Middle School has taken on a unique challenge to end their year: a paper airplane competition.

Students spend the last two weeks of school in their science class reviewing motion and force with the goal of creating the perfect paper airplane.  “Motion and force align with our 7th grade standards.  Students review motion and force as well as the four forces involved with flight: gravity, drag, lift, and thrust,” explains Dague.  “Depending on their design, students will have to account for thrust to overcome drag or consider lift to overcome gravity.  And to be honest, it’s also just good fun to end the school year,” he explains.

There are three overall trophies at stake for the students whose planes take the farthest flight.  In addition, there are some science swag prizes in a one toss competition as well as a new “teacher toss.”

Air Force Sgt. Mingee will also be joining the students during their airplane venture.

7th grade planes will take flight for Bridge Street Staff, Sgt. Mingee, and 6th grade classes on Thursday, 5/22, at 1:30.
